A loud scream reverberated off the trees, and I followed the sound to the left to see a blur of dark green as Ben fell from the sky.

“There he--” Devonna started, but the horrific splattering sound of Ben’s body hitting the ground made her stop mid-sentence.

“Holy hell,” I breathed.

“Oh, good lord.” The Southern woman put her hand over her mouth as she blanched.

“They dropped him…” Natasha’s eyes narrowed on the birds who hovered just above the dead man.

“Well, no shit,” Sarah huffed. “Obviously, they--”

“I mean that they did this on purpose,” the Russian cut in, and the other women stared in horrified silence.

The birds screeched in victory, and then they rushed down to the English man’s lifeless body and began to peck at it relentlessly.

The pack members from the tree branch joined them, and I realized again just how well they blended in. I couldn’t see them at all unless they wanted me to.

“Oh, my god.” Devonna put her hand over her mouth and closed her eyes.

“You think they dropped him as a way to kill him?” Sarah whispered, and her dark brown eyes flashed to mine.

“Yes,” Natasha answered matter-of-factly.

“Is that normal?” Devonna pushed. “Do birds usually do that?”

“I don’t think so.” My brow furrowed as I watched the monsters below. “I mean, I think eagles drop turtles on their shells to break

them, but… that’s pretty fucking extreme with a human involved. I don’t know what bird would think to do that.”

“One that has above average intelligence,” Natasha said in a low voice.

“What should we do?” Devonna watched with wide, dark blue eyes as the birds below tore Ben to pieces. “Should we attack?”

“If they are watching us, we could be their next targets.”

Natasha turned to me.

“I’m betting we’re already their targets.” My heart beat wildly at the sight of the bloody corpse below being ripped apart.

“We should throw our spears at them,” Devonna suggested.

“And what, piss them off?” Sarah whispered. “There’s five of them and only four of us. And if we throw our spears, then we’re totally out of weapons.”

“We have fire,” Devonna said in a desperate attempt to make us do something about the birds.

“We could set the whole jungle on fire,” I pointed out softly.

“We’ve got to be smart about this. Everyone, remain calm.”

“That’s easier said than done when we’re watchin’ Ben down there getting eaten,” Devonna hissed.

The Southern woman had a point. We were just about to let Ben join our small group, and here he was getting torn apart by massive bird monstrosities who’d come out of nowhere.

I racked my brain to try and figure out what we could do to kill these creatures while we had them in sight. The only weapons we had up here were our spears and the two small knives I had on me.

None of those would do much at the moment. Even if we managed to take out four of them with our spears, we were short one spear.

Whatever bird was left could attack us all and do some serious damage since we’d be practically out of weapons to defend ourselves with.
